Assessing The Mobility Challenges of Persons with Disabilty Case Study: George Walker Bush Highway in Accra, Ghana

Abstract


This study aims to assess the extent to which road infrastructure and transport system on the George Walker Bush highway in Accra, Ghana is disability friendly. The major road infrastructure like the Traffic light crossing points, the footbridges, sidewalks and bus stops and the roads medians were assessed. The three main means of transportation (Buses, Minibuses and Taxis.) were also assessed. The road infrastructure like traffic light crossing points, the footbridges, sidewalks and bus stops and the roads medians in most places are not design to be disability friendly. Persons with disability are therefore faced with a lot difficulties in using the road infrastructure. Persons with disability in most case need help from able persons in moving around on this road corridor. Persons with disability also have limited choices on their use of transportation vehicles as the vehicle are not disability friendly. Most disable persons are aided into vehicles by carrying then or are made to crawl into the vehicles.
